"OK, but I like the Calphalon better" 2009-12-19
By Olivia Shaffer (West Palm Beach, FL USA)
I bought this to compare it to the Calphalon pasta cooker and steamer.Calphalon Contemporary Stainless 8-Quart Pot with Glass Lid and 2 Inserts. Both have an insert with holes for pasta and another insert that sits above it for steaming. You can use either or both with the stock pot. Thin spaghetti may escape through the holes of the pasta inserts. Both have the same defect that you need to put in two quarts of water to reach the bottom of the pasta cooker. The Excelsteel is superior in that there is a vent in the glass top. One reviewer of the Calphalon said her top exploded, although I have had no such problem in many years of use. However, the Excelsteel steamer is too shallow. It is only 2 1/2 inches deep. The Calphalon steamer is four inches deep. Sometimes I want to steam a lot of vegetables.Neither this product nor the Calphalon are good for an induction stove.I find the concept of this product and the Calphalon very useful. I have one recipe which requires cooking pasta and then cauliflower in the same water. It is very easy to lift out the pasta in the pasta cooker, empty it, and then put in cauliflower in the same water. If you cook only four servings or less of pasta, you will find the Fasta Pasta cooker used in the microwave more convenient than boiling a lot of water. The Fasta Pasta is also a lot cheaper.Fasta Pasta The Microwave Cooker But I love the steamer of the Calphalon.Either this product or the Calphalon are much better than pouring into a colander when making too much pasta for the Fasta Pasta.

"I love the pots" 2010-03-07
By Gina
I am so surprised to see the negative reviews. I've used my Chantal pots for years and LOVE them. They especially make a difference when making tomato-based dishes and sauces. The acidity reacts with metal pots and changes the flavor. The enamel coating on the Chantal pots protects the flavor and makes food taste better. If you have trouble cleaning the pots, boil a small amount of water and baking soda and they are easy to clean without scrubbing. If you want to try out a piece of Chantal cookware before you spend a lot on the whole set, you can sometimes find them at Marshall's. I think they are seconds, but still good cookware and a good price.I haven't tried the omelette pan, but would imagine the enamel would not be the best choice for cooking eggs. I use a Calphalon greenware omelette pan that is not stick, but supposedly a safer coating.

"not happy." 2009-09-07
By J. Klinge (New York)
We purchased the Chantal cookware after reading several positive reviews on amazon.com. We wanted cookware that was environmentally safe, less toxic and durable. We could justify the higher price for supposedly superior cookware. Upon receiving the cookware i noticed that it seemed very heavy and well made. After using i soon realized that it has a very difficult surface to cook on, foods burn and stick easily. The cookware is so heavy and unbalanced that while using the large pan for cooking pancakes i actually pulled a muscle or tendon in my forearm. It is very difficult and clumsy to handle and very hard to clean. On the bright side it is very attractive cookware and holds heat evenly. Those attributes are not enough for me though,I am planning on giving this cookware away and buying simple aluminum cookware that is lighter and durable and will wait for a more environmentally safe less toxic cookware to arrive on the market.

"Very Pleased with My Set!" 2009-05-12
By Leslie M. Ficcaglia (Port Elizabeth, New Jersey USA)
Many years ago I bought a set of Chantal cookware, in green enamel over metal and with a smooth, relatively stick-free coating that seems like hard porcelain. I use my pots and pans every day and still love them. They are pretty, they clean easily, and I like the glass lids which make it easy to see what's happening in the pan. I have them hanging on an iron rack above my butcher block counter, where they are both decorative and easy to grab.I also use cast iron frying pans and a large soapstone pot, but for most of my cooking I reach for my Chantal.

"I've had my Chantal for a long time" 2009-01-17
By Lynda (Texas)
I spent a great deal of money on my Chantal. Honestly, I picked it for the wrong reason. I wanted the lovely red on my hanging pot rack. I purchased quite a lot, including a set, a tea kettle, the fondue pot and stand, and lots of other pieces. The teflon-type pieces are OK, but no better than ordinary, less expensive pieces. I despise the enamel coated pieces, They scratched from the very beginning, burn your food easily, and food has a tendency to stick. The enamel interior (even while using utensils made for coated cookware)scratched so badly that I contacted Chantal under the warranty. They ignored my request.I never use my Chantal. I have a set of other cookware and a few pieces of Le Creuset. My pretty Chantal hangs on my potrack, untouched. I guess, in a way, it's been a nice decorator touch for my kitchen. But phooey on that!Perhaps they've improved it since I bought mine, but I would never spend another dime on it. For the price, I could have purchased something of much better quality. Another reason for the low rating is that they ignored my correspondence under the warranty.

"A great set" 2010-02-13
By D. Rifkin
I've been using my Fagor set for about a month now, and I'm loving it. I've never had a pressure cooker before, and I'm finding that I'm much more inclined to include healthy beans and whole grains in my meals with the help of these pressure cookers. I didn't know what size would be the best, and I'm glad I went with the 4-quart and 6-quart. I like the 4-quart for when I just want to cook some grains quickly, or for simple one-ingredient side dishes (acorn squash, potatoes, etc.). The 6-quart is big enough for a stew dinner for about 6 people. I considered a larger pressure cooker, but was concerned that it would be difficult to move on and off the stovetop and that it would be cumbersome to wash. I haven't needed a larger size so I'm glad I didn't opt for the 8-quart.The pressure lid is easy to use (easy locking system, straight-forward quick release); It's also easy to clean. I use these pots on an electric stove, and haven't had any trouble. I boil the contents on high, and then turn the burner to medium. (No need for two burners, as some cookbooks suggest.) These are very good quality pots, and I also use them for non-pressure cooking.

"arrived broken" 2009-09-18
By C. Roth (Johnston, Iowa)
I prefer not to review this item. It arrived broken twice. However, I was reimbursed for it and am satified. I purchased this item to give as a wedding gift. I already own a Fagor pressure cooker and I love it! I would buy one again.

"Works great, even for beginners" 2009-03-30
By B. Peters (San Francisco, CA)
This is my first pressure cooker and it works just fine. I had read a million reviews before finally purchasing one and was a little nervous about all the details and such but I didn't need to be. This is pretty idiot-proof...just put in the food and water, twist on the top, flip the lock and you're good to go!Sure, you do need to check the steam output and lower the heat once it really starts going, but I have found that the worst thing that happens if you don't is that you get a little bit of stuff on the top of the pan as the steam rushes out really fast...nothing you can't just clean off. Also, despite the manual saying to not put in dishwasher, I always do (aside from the gasket) and have had no probs after 4 months.

"Ideal sizes, saves more time than energy" 2008-01-07
By B. Montgomery (Indiana USA)
I'm very happy with my pressure cookers, purchased a few months ago. I agonized over whether to purchase the 4 quart or 6 quart model, as I wanted both to be able to cook small amounts (e.g. 2 cups of rice) for small meals and larger amounts for dinner parties. This combination set is perfect, as it allows me to do both, without buying two lids and gaskets, and for considerably less than the cost of buying the two separately. I've made batches of beans and grains in the 4-quart pot, and a variety of soups in the 6 quart pot. It's also been great for cooking winter squash in just a few minutes. The pressure cooker is easy to use and easy to clean (& I'm new to pressure cooking), and thus far the gasket has sealed with relative ease. The steaming basket and flimsy trivet aren't ideal, but this is a minor complaint.I had hoped to save on my energy bill by pressure cooking - since food cooks in a fraction of the time, it should only use a fraction of the electricity / gas. I can't say that I've noticed any changes to my electric bill though, because it turns out that energy use for cooking is a relatively small part of overall energy use. According to Natural Resources Canada (from whom information happened to be conveniently available) the average household with an electric stove uses about 775 KWH (kilowatt hours) of electricity for the stove per year. At $0.12 per KWH, that would amount to about $95. Fagor claims that a pressure cooker reduces energy use by 70%. Assuming that you'll actually pressure cook one-fourth of what you cook on a stove-top that would mean that your average yearly savings would be $95*1/4*0.70, or about $17. Given that the pressure cooker set costs currently about $120, that means it would take about 7 years to recoup your investment in terms of energy savings (this would change a bit if you take into account that in winter the extra heat from cooking helps to heat the house, and in summer you have to pay twice, once to heat the stove and once to re-cool the kitchen). If you buy a new gasket every couple of years, it come out nearly even.In conclusion, my pressure cookers have allowed me to eat more healthy foods - whole grains, legumes and winter squashes - without spending all day cooking. For that it's a good investment, but not so much to save energy.

"Not My Mother's Pressure Cooker, Unfortunately" 2005-09-30
By Cookieknits
I grew up using my mother's old Presto, and was really excited to see what the 21st century brought in the way of pressure cooking. This Fagor set is not at all what I hoped for. Main problem is, I have NO idea how to tell when optimum pressure has been reached, and whether it is being maintained. There is no rocker, just a valve that sputters off and on. I have burned everything I have tried to make. This is very frustrating, as I am an old pro at pressure cooking. The lid is hard to get on and seal. Last night was the last straw. I somehow got the lid jammed on incorrectly and the steam was leaking out the side. It took my husband pounding on the handle with a hammer to get the stupid thing to come off. From the pictures of the new Fagor pressure cookers, it looks like they may have solved the pressure problem with a pop-up button, but I think I am going back to Presto.

This little steamer is really great. I have Type II Diabeties, and this helps a great deal in eliminating bad carbs and getting good.

"Too small!!!!!!" 2010-09-18
By barbie0613
By the look in this photo, it appeared that it was of good size to steam maybe a piece of chicken, vegetables, etc. Well, I was truly disappointed! You couldnt even fit a half a can of campbells soup in it. It looks like a kids play set. Very expensive and very much not worth it. Later I found a pan with steamer insert by emeril. Try that one instead! Stay clear of this one.

I've been trying to find a small steamer for my baby for ages! This is an excellent one: pretty small and easy to wash. It is even enough to steam veggies for our family! I use it a lot.

"Beautiful Little Steamer..." 2010-04-26
By Jim Francis (Miami/London/Negril)
My bigger stainless steamer was just too big for cooking small portions, so I bought this one. It's much easier to prepare food with this because it only holds so much - so I don't end up cooking way more than I should be eating. The smaller amount of water it holds comes to the boil much quicker too and really it only takes maybe 5-7 minutes to steam veggies in it.Great quality stainless steel, easy to clean... I really enjoy using it!

LOVE IT!!!!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!

I rate it with 3 stars because is not thick as i want it to be, but otherwise, great pan.

"very good product" 2010-09-11
By ms (NJ)
This is olne of the best frying pans I have ever used, Cooks food evenly, heats fast, and cleans like a dream. I have seared meats in it and the stuck on residue comes off easily with minimum scrubbing.

I have Two complaints:

The handle constantly needs tightening.

The knob in the middle of the glass lid is mounted on a metal ring. This ring gets very hot, and, when lifting lid, fingers can get burned by this ring, as I found out the hard way.

"Amazon was worse than the pan" 2010-05-14
By G. Wolff (st. pete)
A perfectly good steel pan at the price except the handle broke while cooking. Amazon replaced it but then sent conflicting messages. The first said throw the old one out, your replacement is free. OK, done. Then I started getting messages to return the old one or I would be charged for two pans. My emails to Amazon were not answered. Finally I found a number for a real human who apparently saw the contradictory emails and let me off the hook. A lot of hassle from Amazon for nothing.

"Lid on pot is not safe" 2009-11-13
By kraushaus (NC, USA)
I recently purchased an All-Clad cookware pot because our Revere Ware pot handle broke after 30 years of daily use. Because Revere Ware went out of business, we were unable to replace like with like. So I searched around for a 'high-quality' brand. All Clad was recommended by our local kitchenware store. The pot was on sale, but nevertheless, quite expensive. The first time we used it, we realized we were not entirely happy with this brand. The handle on the pot lid is stainless steel and gets VERY hot. You HAVE TO use an oven mitt to remove the lid or you will be burned badly. I called the company to express our dissatisfaction with the product. The Customer service rep's response: You have to use an oven mitt or you will be burned and this is not covered by warranty. Hmmmm. I am writing this review to let folks know of this before you purchase All-Clad cookware.

"Outstanding cookware" 2009-09-29
By N. Lanzatella (St. Paul, MN United States)
This cookware is beautiful, cooks insanely evenly, and is very easy to clean up. Just like the instructions say, if you want to get it gleaming, use Barkeeper's Friend. The handles do stay quite cool; but, use a pot holder when lifting the lids!! It is the last cookware you will ever need, and it looks like it will last for many, many generations. The 14-piece set includes some really large pieces that are sure to satisfy almost any sort of exotic culinary needs you might have in the future. You might also take a look at getting the steamer insert, double boiler, 4 qt saucepan with loop (3 qt lid fits this too, so does steamer), possibly some smaller pieces like a little fry pan/saucier pan/butter melter, and of course the giant soup pot/steamer/pasta cooker. I might also add their 6 piece kitchen utility set is extremely nice, and compliments this cookware well.It came packed extremely well.

"All-clad cookware set" 2007-02-16
By Redbud Bison 'Mark' (Auburn, Kansas United States)
This product lived up to the all-clad reputation as a quality set of cookware. Having had commerical non-stick calphlon, the cleanup is a little more intensive, but the fact that the product cooking surface is all SS is important to me primarily from a durability perspective. I will be buying more all-clad products.

"Not as godd as they look" 2010-03-08
By Sherry J. Kolasky Babcock (LAS VEGAS, NV, US)
This pan set was not as good as it looks on line. The handles are open and alow the heat for a gas stove to heat them up. I have used and cleaned some already. After washing the finish on the inside does not look the same. Some of the lids seem to be a bit cloudy. Yes the price was great. I suggest for a second home or such. For everyday spend more for a better set.

"cookware" 2010-02-03
By Judy A. Higdon (USA)
I bought the cookware for my daughter in law, for Christmas. They have three little girls. She was really happy about the cookware, because their are no long handles on the pots. She loved that part about them. Not to mention the fact that whatever she cooks, they do not stick. I'm am so pleased with the cookware. Thanks
